TV UPFRONTS 2010-11: THE CW

MONDAYS: 90210 relocates to Mondays, which then leads into GOSSIP GIRL. This seems like a good fit of East Coast brats VS. West Coast brats.
UPFRONT GRADE: B
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: None
HOURS: None

TUESDAYS: Two bubble shows both return, one after the other: ONE TREE HILL, then LIFE UNEXPECTED. Not sure what CW was thinking here. Neither show set the world on fire alone, let alone together? Must have been a TERRIBLE development year.
UPFRONT GRADE: D-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: None

WEDNESDAYS: AMERICAS NEXT TOP MODEL leads into cheerleading show HELLCATS, produced by Tom Welling and starring Ashley Tisdale. Could be fantastic..or could be this years THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE.
UPFRONT GRADE: B-

UPFRONT GRADE: B
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: NIKITA
HOURS: 1.00

FRIDAYS: It's the tenth and final season of SMALLVILLE, leading into 6th-season SUPERNATURAL. These two shows worked so well together on Thursdays. It's nice to see them back together, even if for one final season.

FALL TV UPFRONTS 2010-11: CBS

MONDAYS: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER kicks things off again, with RULES OF ENGAGEMENT following. RULES was contractually obligated to start the season rather than go midseason, so this makes sense. TWO AND A HALF MEN stays at 9, with that show's creator, Chuck Lorre, getting the prime real estate after for MIKE & MOLLY. To top off the night, it's the highly anticipated HAWAII FIVE-O.
UPFRONT GRADE: A+
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: MOTHER, RULES, MEN, MIKE & MOLLY, and HAWAII FIVE-0. In other words, ALL OF THEM! AWESOME NIGHT! CBS gets points for changing things up, moving BIG BANG and CSI MIAMI from their slots.
HOURS: 3.00

TUESDAYS: After premiering two new shows on this night last year, CBS wisely sticks with familiarity here so that NCIS: LA and THE GOOD WIFE can gain traction in their sophomore years following the original NCIS at 8.
UPFRONT GRADE: B+
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: None
HOURS: None

WEDNESDAYS: Another big move, CBS relocates SURVIVOR here, which it has shown to perform well on when CBS had basketball pre-empt the show on Thursdays. CRIMINAL MINDS and the new DEFENDERS follow.
UPFRONT GRADE: B
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: None
HOURS: None

THURSDAYS: Another HUGE move: BIG BANG THEORY kicks off the comedy block, which is CBS's highest-rated sitcom. For once, CBS has a chance to have another successful comedy hour, what with the new and buzzy BLEEP MY DAD SAYS following it. Its business as usual after that: the original CSI and then THE MENTALIST.
UPFRONT GRADE: A-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: BIG BANG, BLEEP MY DAD SAYS
HOURS: 1.00

FRIDAYS: WOW! Three scripted shows: MEDIUM, then CSI: NY, and then the new BLUE BLOODS with Tom Selleck. This is another bold move by CBS, and with the other nets also programming scripted shows on this night, Fridays could one again be contenders. Thank you, CBS!
UPFRONT GRADE: A
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: None
HOURS: None

SATURDAYS: Repeats of their CRIMETIME SATURDAYS for the first two hours, then 48 HOURS MYSTERY
UPFRONT: C-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: None

SUNDAYS: 60 MINUTES, THE AMAZING RACE, UNDERCOVER BOSS and the relocated CSI: MIAMI. Looking good!
UPFRONT: B
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: None
HOURS: None

OVERALL UPFRONT GRADE: A. After canning many of their long-running shows (COLD CASE, NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE, NUMBERS, and THE GHOST WHISPERER), CBS has moved some other long-runners around in a very competitive effort to mix things up. The result is the most ambitiious CBS slate I have seen in a LONG TIME!
SHOWS: HIMYM, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, TWO AND A HALF MEN, MIKE & MOLLY, HAWAII FIVE-0, BIG BANG THEORY, and BLEEP MY DAD SAYS
HOURS: 5.00

Based on the trailers ONLY, here are my rankings of the new shows coming to FOX in the 2010-2011 season:

RAISING HOPE....................8
LONESTAR........................8
RUNNING WILDE...................7
RIDE-ALONG......................6
BOB'S BURGERS...................6
MIXED SIGNALS...................5

[No trailer yet for TERRA NOVA]

FALL TV UPFRONTS 2010-11: ABC

MONDAYS: The usual: DANCING WITH THE STARS for 2 hours leading into junior year bubbly show CASTLE, which could break out wide next fall. It's certainly been on a roll this year thanks to the resurgent DANCING. Better hope the casting people of DANCING choose wisely again, since their choices this last season reinvigorated the aging reality competition.
UPFRONT GRADE: B
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: None
HOURS I WILL WATCH: None

TUESDAYS: The buzzy NO ORDINARY FAMILY will kick things off. Its about a family who's plane crashes in the Amazon, and then the family discovers they have certain superpowers. Looks really fun! But then so did PUSHING DAISIES, and you saw what ABC did to that one. The DWTS RESULTS show follows, and then the documentary-style police drama DETROIT 1-8-7 wraps the night.
UPRFRONT GRADE: A-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: NO ORDINARY FAMILY. DETROIT looks kinda interesting, but i will most likely not watch it.
HOURS: 1.00

WEDNESDAYS: Comedy is king again for ABC. THE MIDDLE will kick it off, followed by newcomer BETTER TOGETHER starring one of my favorite actresses (REBA's JoAnna Garcia). MODERN FAMILY and COUGAR TOWN keep the comfort flowing. Then THE WHOLE TRUTH finishes the night.
UPFRONT GRADE: A
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: MIDDLE, BETTER TOGETHER, MODERN FAMILY, and COUGAR TOWN

THURSDAYS: MY GENERATION starts the night out and follows high school students from graduation to 10 years later. Shonda Rimes' GREYS ANATOMY and PRIVATE PRACTICE stay put. Yawn.
UPFRONT GRADE: C+
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: MY GENERATION

FRIDAYS: Reality SECRET MILLIONAIRE starts the night; Dana Delaney's new show BODY OF PROOF gets the ugly 9 pm birth; and 20/20 closes out.
UPFRONT: B-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: None
HOUR: None

SATURDAYS: College Football

SUNDAYS:
Nothing new here, unfortunately. AMERICAS NEXT TOP MODEL, EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and BROTHERS & SISTERS. ABC really dropped the ball here. If they wanted to save HOUSEWIVES, they should have been more aggressive. EXTREME has been sucky for two years now, and isnt it time to test out a NEW show following HOUSEWIVES? I'm afraid CBS is going to win this night now.

UPFRONTS 2010-2011: FOX

MONDAYS: HOUSE kicks things off at 8, no surprise there. That leads into the new drama series LONESTAR, which sounds intriguing. Could this have tinges of DALLAS to it, or it will it be more like JUSTIFIED? I havent a clue, which is always exciting. The show sounds original enough, and I look forward to sampling it.
UPFRONT GRADE: B
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: LONESTAR
HOURS: 1.00

TUESDAYS: GLEE goes to 8, which is great as a platform to lead into the live-action comedies RAISING HOPE and RUNNING WILDE, two newbies that I will be sure to sample. But given FOXs track record with LIVE ACTION, I won't hold my breath (ahem, BROTHERS, TIL DEATH and SONS OF TUCSON).
UPFRONT GRADE: A-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: GLEE, RAISING HOPE, and RUNNING WILDE. My kinda night!
HOURS: 2.00

WEDNESDAYS: LIE TO ME makes a surprising 3rd season return, followed by reality HELL'S KITCHEN. Not a fan of either, so don't look for me to watch FOX on this night until AMERICAN IDOL returns mid-season.
UPFRONT GRADE: C-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: NONE
HOURS: NONE

THURSDAYS: BONES is back, though not with me. I never did jump on the BONES bandwagon. As for FRINGE, it all depends if I screen seasons 1 and 2 on DVD before-hand, which I plan to do over the summer. I don't want to miss out on another season of FRINGE, which I hear is great.
UPFRONT GRADE: B-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: FRINGE
HOURS: 1.00

FRIDAYS: AWESOME NEWS! Fox is going with scripted again, though I worry that HUMAN TARGET won't find an audience here. But I am also intrigued with GOOD GUYS being on the sked, seeing as how that show hasnt even previewed yet for summer. FOX must have faith in it. I am looking forward to it. Both actually. Only saw HUMAN TARGET a couple times this season and liked what I saw.
UPFRONT GRADE: For a Friday, I give this an A
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: maybe HUMAN TARGET, maybe GOOD GUYS. Just not gonna commit at this time to either one.
HOURS: None

SATURDAY: COPS, more COPS, then AMERICAS MOST WANTED
UPFRONT: For a Saturday, a B- (Hey, at least its original programming!)
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: None

FALL TV UPFRONTS: 2010-2011: NBC

MONDAYS: NBC brings CHUCK back to the very timeslot its held since it premiered: Monday nights at 8. I wonder if this is wise, considering CHUCK has never really broken out from this crowded timeslot? I was hoping a move to Tues or Wedn. Maybe Sunday nights after football would be a good fit too? Anyway, I'm just glad its back. Following CHUCK is the new THE EVENT, which is NBCs attempt to steal the LOST crowd. I think this is smart, since it replaces HEROES in the same genre timeslot. And Jerry Bruckheimer's CHASE looks as good as anything to compete against the fading CSI MIAMI and the still-bubbly CASTLE.
OVERALL UPFRONT GRADE: B+
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: CHUCK, THE EVENT. Not too excited about CHASE, unless it shows me something I havent seen before in that genre.
TOTAL HOURS: 2.0

TUESDAYS: Nothing changes here. It's BIGGEST LOSER for the first two hours, then second seasoner PARENTHOOD. I kinda like PARENTHOOD, but I wonder if that show wouldn't work better in an earlier hour. Again, maybe Sundays once football is over.
OVERALL UPFRONT GRADE: B-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: PARENTHOOD
TOTAL HOURS: 1.0

WEDNESDAYS: An all-crime night, starting with the Hart to Hart-inspired UNDERCOVERS. If this plays comedic, I will stick with it. But LAW & ORDER SVU and the new LOS ANGELES L & O following it aren't my cup of tea. Still, looks to be a solid night if ABCs comedies don't spoil the party.
OVERALL UPFRONT GRADE: B-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: UNDERCOVERS, solely for JJ Abrams. Could be a knockout!
TOTAL HOURS: 1.0

THURSDAYS: Ahhh, comedy! Must See TV! Its COMMUNITY, followed by 30 ROCK. Then THE OFFICE leads into the new OUTSOURCED. Then, to top it off, Becki Newton's LOVE BITES, which sounds like great counter-programming in the the hour. I am actually glad to see NBC trying hour-long comedy/drama shos at the 10 pm hour, like PARENTHOOD.
OVERALL UPFRONT: A-
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: COMMUNITY, 30 ROCK, THE OFFICE, OUTSOURCED, LOVE BITES. My kinda night!
TOTAL HOURS: a solid 3.0

FRIDAYS: WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE leads into DATELINE. The new Jimmy Smits OUTLAW closes out the night. YAWN!
OVERALL UPFRONT: D+
SHOWS I WILL WATCH: NONE
TOTAL HOURS: NONE

SATURDAY: Scratch

SUNDAY: FOOTBALL

OVERALL:
TOTAL HOURS I WILL WATCH on NBC: 7.00 hours
NEW SHOWS I WILL WATCH: THE EVENT, UNDERCOVERS, OUTSOURCED and LOVE BITES

Most of the shows I'd been looking forward to on NBC won't premiere until midseason: PARKS & RECREATION, THE CAPE, FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS, PERFECT COUPLES and THE PAUL REISER SHOW. I worry about these comedies because NBC seems to promise them at midseason in the past, only to burn them off in the summer or never show them all (ex: THE SINGLES TABLE, THE IT CROWD and last season's very own 100 QUESTIONS). BOO! I also worry that if COMMUNITY doesn't score early on, or if OUTSOURCED doesn't spark, both will be canned early in favor of the newbies. Either way, viewers lose.

OVERALL UPFRONT GRADE: C+

MIDSEASON

Parks and Recreation
The Cape
Friends With Benefits
Perfect Couples
Harry’s Law
The Paul Reiser Show (formerly “Next”)
The Apprentice
The Marriage Ref
America’s Next Great Restaurant

TV REWIND: The Top Ten of 2009-2010: A closer Look

#1: TRUE BLOOD (HBO): Last year's top NEW SHOW is this year's TOP SHOW, knocking the departing LOST down a notch. And why be so cruel to LOST in it's final year? Well, those sexy naked vampires, of course! But no, it goes deeper than that. Alan Ball's HBO show is totally addictive (like V juice itself, I suppose). It can be campy at times, but isnt that part of the fun and charm? To totally take an escape from the real world and delve into fun, adult entertainment? Season 3 starts up June 13, and its looking SO HOT!

#2: LOST (ABC): This is the final week EVER for this groundbreaking, epic TV show. I can't say I have been totally happy with it in its final year, but I am hoping that these last two episodes will fill in most of my questions. Because if it doesnt, and I am still truly LOST in the final seconds of the finale, I will be PISSED OFF. Devoting six years to the show HAS to have a satisfying pay-off, right? I mean, no fade to blacks, please. Something tells me I won't be disappointed, though.

#3: BIG BANG THEORY (CBS): I wasnt a fan of the Penny/Leonard hook-up, but TBBT is still a consistently funny ensemble, and Jim Parsons as Sheldon has never been better. One of the highlights of my week!

#4: GLEE (FOX): SEE TOP FIVE NEW SHOWS blog entry

#5: THE MIDDLE (ABC): SEE TOP FIVE NEW SHOWS blog entry

#6: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (CBS): A few years ago, when this show had no one watching it and I stumbled upon it, HIMYM was the show I raved about. Then it got popular, and somehow it's original charm faded. But just a little. MOTHER is still widely entertaining, but I am frustrated: tell us the mother. The show works as an ensemble and is sooo much bigger than the original hook of the mother reveal. It will still work, trust me. So who is she?

#7: DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (ABC): This was probably the worse season yet for HOUSEWIVES, yet I still get a thrill every Sunday night when I hear Mary Alice Williams start her narrative. Actually, these last few eps have been pretty good, and the show seems to be buiding to a nice conclusion tonight. So let's hope Marc Cherry gets his creative act together over the summer and delivers an awesome 7th season.

#8: SUPERNATURAL (CW): It's the Apocalypse! ANd its soooo boring! SUPER works best when its just a simple, scary, freak of the week episode. But Castiel and the Apocalypse? YAWN! The Winchester boys are so much better than the muddle the writers gave us. Still, when SUPERNATURAL works, it is SUPER indeed!

#9: MODERN FAMILY (ABC): See TOP FIVE NEW SHOWS blog entry

#10: COMMUNITY (NBC): See TOP FIVE NEW SHOWS blog entry

TV REWIND: TOP 5 NEW SHOWS 2009-2010

#1: GLEE (FOX) I had two favorite new shows that were running neck and neck most of the season, but I gave the edge to GLEE because of the sheer amount of work and creativity that goes into each hour to make this show the phenomenon that is. I cringe to think of all the logistics involved with music choice, interpretation, choreography...plus the off-the-wall writing and casting and acting and directing, etc. This show is HUGE, and so deserves all the accolades being heaped upon it. GLEE is also the first successful musical tv series EVER. Take that, FAME and VIVA LAUGHLIN and, gulp, COP ROCK. Let's hope the show doesnt burn out too quickly.

#2: THE MIDDLE (ABC) Surprised? Yeah, MODERN FAMILY stole most of the ABC glory, but it's this small, well-acted family comedy that truly captures my heart every week and makes me want to laugh out loud silly with kids Axle (nice boxers!), Sue (nice braces!), and Brick (nice book! booooook!). An early renewal seemed like a miracle when this show first aired, and why? YOU try following the dismal HANK and still stay hot.

#3: MODERN FAMILY (ABC) Okay, and see? I don't hate MODERN FAMILY either! Totally funny show with an ever-engaging cast. I can't say I was a fan right out of the gate, but the recent trip to Hawaii episode totally sealed the deal. I am a fan. Go Cam and Mitchell!

#4: COMMUNITY (NBC): Thursday nights just got a whole lot more fun with the tonally-perfect COMMUNITY starring Soup-guy Joel McHale. But it's the ensemble that truly makes this show stand out. Troy and Ahbed are HIGHLARIOUS! And who knew Chevy Chase would make such a nice comeback this late in his career. Go senor!

#5 COUGAR TOWN (ABC): Completing a total-comedy TOP FIVE is Courtney Cox's terribly-titled sitcome that started out about a 40-ish woman dating younger guys and turned into her next FRIENDS. I DO love the acerbic Barb, and fear she will be dropped if ABC changes the title of this still-percolating sitcome. Oh, and FREAKS & GEEKS's Kimmy, aka the wonderful BUsy Phillips, is B.RILLIANT in COUGAR TOWN.

HONORABLE MENTION: Just missing the list are two sci-fi shows, both picked up for next season, STARGATE UNIVERSE and ABC's redo of V.

SPRING TV REVIEW: TREME

Okay, so I feel kind bad ragging on this new HBO series because it comes with a fine pedigree. And for the most part, the creatives involved got the mood and the vibrancy of the people right. I just wasn't particularly entertained by the pilot. Watching people parade down a street playing music IS New Orleans, but it didn't make for good drama. And the Katrina hook only goes so far. B-

NOTE: With TREME, I have now wrapped up my reviews of all new scripted TV (and some select reality) shows from the 2009-2010 TV season of shows that premiered from June 1, 2009 thru May 31, 2010. The only new show that I know of still to air is THE GOOD GUYS, but its a preview show for a regular summer slot (much like the GLEE pilot was last year at this time before taking the summer off). All new reviews will be for SUMMER TV and will go toward the 2010-2011 TV season, which is announced next week.

Spring TV Review: HAPPY TOWN

Were you a fan of either TWIN PEAKS or HARPER'S ISLAND? I was, and so it came as a nice surprise to see the weird, strange, spooky HAPPY TOWN on ABC. Too bad the first two episodes didn't make any dent in the ratings, because now I am afraid to get any more hooked into the show if ABC is going to pull the plug on me. The show is built around a town that hasnt had any murder or crime for 5 years, which followed a 7-year stretch where one town member disappeared per year. Now the killings have started up again. Please watch. B
