WINTER TV REVIEW: VICTORIOUS!

Yet another inane "sitcom" for tweens, "Victorious" hardly lives up to its name. From the painful laugh-track to the contrived and uninspired writing, this piece of dreck from Nickelodeon skates by solely on the charms of the pilot's wickedly good production number finale. But one song and dance act does not a successful comedy series make. I do kinda wish the show luck (it'll need it), but I will stick to GLEE, thank you very much. D

WINTER TV REVIEW: FLY GIRLS

Just when I thought reality TV on The CW couldnt get any worse than HIGH SOCIETY, along comes FLY GIRLS and nearly dethrones it. Right From the get-go I could smell 'total Fake job' on this show. That 'moment' happens when one of the flight attendants meets an IFB (in-flight-boyfriend) who is soooo gorgeous, but 'acts' beyond badly. You know it's all Fake because this First introduction between the two is perfectly lit and Framed. Then the same continues For the next 10 minutes (and longer, if I had actually Finished the show to the end). If you couldnt already Figure out, I give this show an f.

AMERICAN IDOL...Who's Touring?

On tonight's AMERICAN IDOL, America will know which 10 performers will be touring. Now, I know that Tim Urban is this year's Sanjaya to many, but I also see a sexy guy who can rock a swimsuit. He has that IT charisma thing that none of the other guys come close to. For that alone, Tim SHOULD have been praised better by the judges last night. Don't they realize that someone like Tim is going to get tween girls and gay men's attention? Really, isnt Tim Urban a better sexualized draw to the tour than the dumpy, forgettable Andrew Garcia? All along I have said that Tim doesn't deserve to win (that honor should go to Crystal Bowersox or Siobhan Magnus). And based on last night's show, I thought Andrew Garcia and Paige performed WAY worse than Tim. Tim had fun, and pulled off what Andrew tried to do. Further, Andrew's cockiness and I LOVE YOU EVERYONE speech left me gagging. My pick to send home is Andrew. Paige also hasnt impressed, but I see her more for the tour than anyone else. By the way, since the judges were so harsh on Tim last night, I bet Tim's fans all voted like mad to keep him in. I voted 7 times for him. LOL

So, in order of how I think they should rank from Winner to 10th place, here is my personal listing:

1. Siobhan Magnus (Hard because Crystal is right up there with her in my eyes)
2. Crystal Bowersox
3. Aaron Kelly
4. Lee Dewyze
5. Tim Urban
6. Didi Benami
7. Casey James
8. Michael Lynche
9. Katie
10. Paige

FYI: It's ashame that Lily Scott isnt listed. If she had survived the TOP 12, I would have ranked her 3rd or 4th.

WINTER TV REVIEW: Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution

This is a tricky review because it encompasses so many different things. The premise of the series is Jamie spending 4 months in Huntington Virginia, the CDC's listing as the fattest city in the world. Jamie's efforts on the show are to go into the schools, homes and politics of the city and reform it. Brave, yes, but he is met with ugly americans, notably lunch lady Alice. It's a show that cues the music to make you cry, then chimes in with ugly music whenever Alice appears. Yep, she's 'the villain' of this show. As with most reality, I am always second-guessing the action to determine what is staged and what is not. I sorta like the show, but I feel VERY manipulated at times. So in the end, I like Jamie, I like his mission, but I dont like being played. I also don't care much to see the rest of the series, and that's just not revolutionary enough..for me. C-

WINTER TV REVIEW: HIGH SOCIETY

I think it will come as a no-brainer that I give CW's ""reality"" show HIGH SOCIETY an F. It's an ugly 30 minutes of watching ugly people treat other people in such an ugly, mean way that it really makes me start to loathe the CW. At least it's good to know that HS had the worst series premiere of the season for the CW, taking that statistic off Ashton Kutcher's TBL: THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE, which used to have the lowest-rated honors. Next week, CW premieres another reality show, FLY GIRLS, right after HIGH SOCIETY. At least FLY GIRLS can only go up in quality compared to HIGH SOCIETY, which gets teh WORSE-RATED F of the season. An F---

WINTER TV REVIEW: SONS OF TUCSON

It's ashame that there hasnt been an audience for FOX's live-action SONS OF TUCSON starring eterna-slacker Tyler Labine (late of REAPER and INVASION), because SONS has moments of inspired hilarity and promise. Whether the show lasts beyond the next few weeks is anyone's guess. I imagine FOX will pull it and burn it off this summer, instead replacing it with other animation domination repeats. In TUCSON, the show isnt as funny as say THE MIDDLE or even MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE, but its still a fun slice of life to savor. Enjoy it while it lasts. B-

CHecking in with the networks...

ABC: Oh, ABC....you've come so far in the past, but yet you cancel fun shows before their time (PUSHING DAISIES, DIRTY SEXY MONEY) and don't give sure-fire hits a chance (FOOTBALLER WIVES). This season you fumbled FLASHFORWARD, LOST is done, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES is looking desperate, and BETTER OFF TED is sorta dead. Your shining star is V, so please don't fuck up and cancel it. Thank GOD you gave us THE MIDDLE, MODERN FAMILY and COUGAR TOWN, all of which were renewed early. So I know you have it in you to greenlight CHARLIE'S ANGELS for next year. Just PLEASE dont go changing the tone of that series. I don't want a rehash horror like I got with NBCs BIONIC WOMAN and KNIGHT RIDER. Keep ANGLES light and frothy and jiggly. I am gay, and its okay to show some female skin. But maybe a male angel would be fun, too? I digress, back to this season: I am happy Nathan Fillion has a hit with CASTLE. I was getting worried about him after FIREFLY and DRIVE tanked. I don't care much for GREYS or PRIVATE PRACTICE or BACHELOR or DANCING WITH THE STARS or SUPERNANNY or BROTHERS & SISTERS. But that's okay so long as you're okay. ANd as one of the only networks developing ANYTHING genre-related, please also greenlight NO ORDINARY FAMILY to series...and make it fun like THE INCREDIBLES instead of dark like HEROES. ABC, you've done okay this year. Now do GREAT come fall.

FOX: Going into the season, there wasn't all that much I was excited about with FOX. At that point in time (SEPT 2009), I had only seen the pilot of GLEE and hadnt yet gotten hooked enough on the show (it has since become my second favorite series in all of tv land). Now as the season comes to an end, I am liking more about FOX than I thought I ever would. After GLEE, I am once again a fan of AMERICAN IDOL (thanks to Ellen DeGeneres, which got me to tune in, then the hotness of Tim Urban kept me intrigued. Now I am all about Siobhan Magnus and Crystal Bowersox. Go Ladies! Along the way, I took a liking to HUMAN TARGET, though its not must-see TV for me. And I plan to get into FRINGE over the summer with seasons 1 and 2 now that I know the series has been picked up for a third. As for their Animation Domination, I love AMERICAN DAD, dig SIMPSONS, also dig CLEVELAND BROWN, but hate FAMILY GUY. Go figure. As for you SONS OF TUCSON, you are still on my DVR to check out. BOMBS AWAY to PAST LIFE. Hated it. And 24 and LIE TO ME never caught my attention, so no losses there if they don't return).

NBC: After 5 years of going from tops (FRIENDS and ER) to bottoms (JAY LENO SHOW), you FINALLY got rid of Ben Silverman and Conan O Brien, and for once you actually have some buzz (MARRIAGE REF and PARENTHOOD). I love your Thursday comedies (COMMUNITY, 30 ROCK, PARK and REC and THE OFFICE), and would love for you to develop 2 more comedies for fall. Also, be sure to bring back CHUCK for a fourth season. That will give that show enough episodes to go into syndication, not to mention, I love CHUCK! Now that JAY LENO is gone, you have a great opportunity to throw a whole slew of new shows at us come fall...and I know some will stick! Once you get a hit or two, that buzz will build into more buzz and YOU WILL COME BACK STRONG! I am rooting for you, NBC!

CBS: Poor, poor, CBS. SInce I am not a crime procedural nut, I have pretty much turned my nose up to all your hits (NCIS, CSI, CRIMINAL MINDS, THE MENTALIST, GOOD WIFE, blah blah blah). The only shows that work for me are your comedies (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, NEW CHRISTINE, BIG BANG THEORY and TWO.FIVE MEN). Didn't like GARY UNMARRIED or ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE, so dump them and give us even more comedic reasons to tune in to you. As for fall, i hear you have more, UGH, crime shows on the way. Okay, well, the only one you BETTER greenlight is the new HAWAII FIVE-O. I am looking forward to seeing hottie Alex Laughlin, LOST's Daniel Dae Kim and Battlestar Galactica's GRACE PARK. Plus, its HAWAII! YAY!

CW: You somehow fucked it up with MELROSE PLACE, which sucks because I wanted that show to succeed! I loved the original, but seeing how you wasted Heather Locklear and Laura Leighton, it's no wonder the show tanked. The new cast royally sucked, even worse than your 90210 show. YOu know, if your network wasn't so fucking focused on teens (gag me ONE TREE HILL and GOSSIP GIRL), maybe you'd have a bigger audience. So yeah, I am mad you messed with MELROSE (which also means there won't be a rush of nighttime soap pilots..i was wanting a new DYNASTY, dudes!) But I HAVE to congrattie you guys for renewing SUPERNATURAL for a sixth season and SMALLVILLE for a tenth. As for VAMPIRE DIAIRIES? Whatevs!

WINTER TV REVIEW: JUSTIFIED

Mmmmm, I LOVE cable TV. This new show on FX simmers slowly, but is so well-done that you forget you are watching a television series. JUSTIFIED plays like a film, and with Timothy Olyphant (so yummy in DEADWOOD and GO) and DIRTY SEXY MONEY's Natalie Zea on tap, this Leonard Elmore-based show has all the trappings of a hit. I smell it (mmmm, and I can almost smell Olyphant in his cowboy boots and hat). Tim's grin alone made me dash off to the bathroom after the first 10 minutes alone. Five minutes later, I finished watching the rest of JUSTIFIED. B+

WINTER TV REVIEW: UGLY AMERICANS

Comedy Central's SOUTH PARK just returned for, like, its 100th season, and the show still has plenty of laughs on tap. Still, CC needs to start looking for something fresher (and FUTURAMA's return in June, though exciting, is still tapping into the past), so fortunately for COMEDY CENTRAL, they may just have their next new hit in the zombies-and-other-monsters-and-aliens animated UGLY AMERICANS. I'm not sure the show is balls-out funny, but it's certainly promising. As long as it doesnt go for the cheap and mean humor all the time, UGLY could break-out and be a formidable series for CENTRAL. B-

WINTER TV REVIEW: PLAYERS

SPIKE HD TV has a hot new show, but PLAYERS isn't it. Whereas BLUE MOUNTAIN STATE shows male nudity and general raunch to funny effect, PLAYERS tries the same (without the male nudity) and never elicits a single laugh. In fact, I can sum up the show in a single word: PAINFUL. D-

NBC COMEDY RETURNS INTACT

Yesterday it was announced that the entire NBC Thursday comedy lineup of COMMUNITY, PARKS & REC, THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK will all be back for the 2010/2011 season. Whether or not all four shows keep their current timeslots will depend on NBCs comedy development of pilots. I imagine NBC will done a slight tinkering, maybe moving one of those shows out of its current spot to allow a preview of a new show, or NBC may do what ABC did last year and launch an hour or two of totally new comedy shows on Wednesday night. Personally, I think NBC should leave Thursdays alone and let the comedy shows find their own footing. It's an awesome line-up, and one that I don't want to see messed up. After the terrible KATH & KIM and the uninteresting MY NAME IS EARL, I think NBC finally has it's MUST SEE groove back on.

I'm still jumping with joy to see COMMUNITY back. That, and PARKS, are my two fave new shows. I still love THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK, but they've established themselves, whereas the first two were underdogs much of the season. COMMUNITY ranks #3 in my FAVE NEW SHOWS LINE-UP (THE MIDDLE and GLEE taking the top two spots, and V and MODERN FAMILY ranking 4 and 5.)

WINTER TV REVIEW: WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

This NBC reality show started slow, and ended slow, with only a few jolts of adrenaline keeping me awake whenever the theme music played and the 'tree' was visited, detailing Sarah Jessica Parker's lineage to a Gold Rush relative and a witch-trial relative. Otherwise, it was hard to stomach seeing Jessica say "oh my God" whenever new bits of info came her way. This show is, in my opinion, only exciting for the star involved. Sorry, but its hard for me to get excited about finding out about someone else's past. And when that 'someone' is a star that I don't even like, well you can imagine how borrrrrrring WHO can be. D+

WINTER TV REVIEW 2009: MINUTE TO WIN IT

Go online and you can download each of the 65 games that contestants get drilled with in the new, fun, MINUTE TO WIN IT. What's fun about the show is seeing regular people be put to the test to win a game involving regular household items within a minute. Win all ten games and you win a million bucks. That's pretty much it, and host Guy Fieri is fun to watch. Too many commercials, though. This is fun time-wasting material, much more exciting than previous show DEAL OR NO DEAL. But with most of these game shows, burnout is high. The 'celebrity' edition of MINUTE should be fun, though. C

What makes an AMERICAN IDOL?

My friends and I raised this question recently when we compared the sexiness of Tim Urban, who doesnt have the commanding vocal chops of someone like Andrew Garcia. But where Garcia oozes zero stage presence, the guy CAN croon. But can Garcia's mug sell records? I don't think he can, whereas all Tim Urban has to do is look at me with his puppy-dog eyes and shit-grin smile and I M.E.L.T. In the recording studio, anyone's voice can be made to sound better (ahem, Paula Abdul). And with some further training and experience, I think it's Tim Urban who's more the real deal (speaking AMERICAN IDOL expectations, solely) than someone like Garcia. Does Tim deserve to win this year? No way! There are soooo many wickedly talented girls this year that it would be robbery if Tim won, which I have no expectations he will. However, I DO think he will coast into the Top Twelve on his looks alone, assuming he doesnt totally fall on his ass next week before the Top Twelve are announced. So of the guys, I want Tim in there, for sure, as well as Todrick (hottie and very talented.,..he OWNS the stage). The rest of the guys are all kinda forgettable for me. That Aaron Kelly and the guy with the mullet...they just seem so insecure on the stage, and I am tired of their 'aw shucks, sir' politeness. Big Mike just kinda annoys me with his near-bully-like 'tude. The other two, blondie Kurt Cobain lookalike and the guy from Chicago (obviously these two havent made a big impression on me yet since i cant remember their names yet), will make it to the final 6 guys, too. But it's Tim Urban with his Idol-ready looks and presence that make me want to call and vote for him, even though he doesnt have the best male vocals. But I'd buy his stuff, for SURE! Ultimately, what I hope happens to Tim is what Ellen told him on the stage this week: that he would be great as an actor on GLEE! Hell yeah, if that happened, DING DANG! That would be sooooo awesome, dawgs!

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES seems...well, desperate

Or maybe stale is the better word. Six years in, things have gotten rather ho-hum on Wisteria Lane. The Drea Matteo storyline is the least-exciting 'seaons-long mystery' yet. In the words of Joy Behar, as acted out by Fred Armisen on Saturday Night Live, "so what? Who cares?" Rumor has it that Teri Hatcher's Susan character will be offed next year, the show's seventh. That would be a huge welcome relief because some new blood is DEFINITELY needed. At one time I would have loved to have seen Heather Locklear join the cast. And I still would, since she was sorely wasted on MELROSE PLACE this year. I also think it's time for one of the long-term couples to finally call it quits. Either Gabby needs a new man, or Lynette does. Don't get me wrong, I like Carlos and Tom, and I fully support that one of the two pairings needs to be with the series til its death days, but having BOTH couples still together just tires things up. I guess Tom and Lynette, in my mind, have the more traditional safe view of parenthood, what with all the kids. So maybe toss Carlos aside for a younger himbo for Gabby to love and perish. hehe.
That leaves Bree. Oh so wonderful Bree! Marcia Cross's portrayal of the redhead anal retentive superwoman has never bored me. Her character can do no wrong. Give this chick an Emmy!
I would also like to see the gay couple, Bob and Lee get more airtime. But yeah, I'm a little biased there.
I give the DESPERATE show in it's sixth cycle a C-.
PAST RATINGS:
SEASON 1 (The First, and Best): Central Mystery: The Mary Alice suicide. A+
SEASON 2: The Applegate woman and the boy in the basement. Blech! C
SEASON 3: Orson's crazy dead first redhead wife storyline: B+
SEASON 4: Katherine Mayfair's psycho hubby storyline: B
SEASON 5: Crazy Neal MccDonough's parental revenge storyline: B-

WINTER TV REVIEW: THE MARRIAGE REF

Hmmmm...this is a hard show to grade. My first reaction to the first few minutes was to knee-herk the show with an F grade. But I decided to be fair and watch all 30 minutes. Miraculously, the show improved, even though the content didnt. I know that doesnt make much sense, but there was something in the tone of the series that worked for me, even though it shouldnt have. First, the taped segments seemed staged, and I am not sure what the true purpose of REF is. But I did laugh along with the all-star panel, and it did mindlessly pass the time. But I really dont see the show being all that much of a hit in the long run. And maybe not even in the short run. You decide. Or not. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Yada yada yada. C-

HOT IN CLEVELAND goes to series!

The HOllywood Reporter just announced that TV LAND had acquired its first scripted series, a 10 episode comedy starring sitcom vets Valerie Bertinelli (fresh off ONE DAY AT A TIME, just kidding), Jane Leeves (Fresh off a guest stint on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES), Wendie Malick (off the genius JUST SHOOT ME) and Betty White (hotter than ever thanks to THE PROPOSAL and that Super Bowl ad).

Pilot Season: Snooooooze

As a genre TV fan, I am less than thrilled about what the nets are developing for next fall. Whereas the past few seasons have been rife with genre TV thanks to LOST and HEROES (i.e., THRESHOLD, SURFACE, INVASION, PUSHING DAISIES, REAPER, FLASHFORWARD, V), the only kinda-genre show on the map is the family of heroes show NO ORDINARY FAMILY on ABC. That's a HUGE bummer, especially since LOST ends this year, HEROES should end this year, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA ended last year, and V and FLASHFORWARD failed to make an impact this year. SYFY at least is continuing on with CAPRICA and STARGATE: UNIVERSE. So, with genre, not looking good.

BUT, I love me some situation comedies, and after ABCs success with THE MIDDLE, MODERN FAMILY and COUGAR TOWN, comedy is making a huge comeback. ABC has 11 new pilots on tap, and NBC and CBS are also very much in the comedy game. Which makes sense, since when a comedy hits, its syndication rewards really pay off. Only THE CW finds itself without comedy on its table.

Genre, bad; Comedy: good. Crime procedurals? BLECH! There seems to be no end in sight for these types of shows, which bums me out. I hate CSI and LAW & ORDER (though I am happy to see the NBC show make its historic 21st season come fall). Another CRIMINAL MINDS is coming, as is a new LAW & ORDER, set in LA. Eventually the day will come when people will be frakkin tired of these shows. I hope that day comes soon! The only pilots in this field I am looking forward to are remakes: HAWAII FIVE-0 on CBS, THE ROCKFORD FILES on NBC and CHARLIE'S ANGELS on ABC.

Where does reality stand? LOL. The days of new reality shows hitting the big-time seem to be over (save for the occassional fluke like UNDERCOVER BOSS, which needed the Super Bowl to make it click. And even that show, by fall, should crumble significantly, so says my crystal ball). AMERICAN IDOL, BIGGEST LOSER, BACHELOR, SURVIVOR...these shows are still huge, but newbies making it big, not so much. HOWEVER, all bets are off come Fall 2011 when FOX brings Simon Cowell's THE X FACTOR to the waves.
