FALL TV REVIEW: Life is Wild

Life didn't seem so wild for me when I watched LIFE IS WILD on The CW last night. In fact, life was kind of boring. I just could not get into it. And with just a few new fall shows left for me to sample, I don't really have the patience or desire to go ga-ga over anything that is just average. And, really, LIFE IS WILD really is just average.
C
MY PREDICTION: With buzzy shows like REAPER, GOSSIP GIRL and ALIENS IN AMERICA failing to get viewers I don't think an unbuzzy show LIFE IS WILD even stands a chance. Look for some reality programming to take LIFE's place in the not too distant future.

FALL TV REVIEWS: GOSSIP GIRL, KVILLE, BACK TO YOU

FALL TV REVIEW: GOSSIP GIRL
I realize I am outside of THE GOSSIP GIRL demo, but I can appreciate good junk TV when I see it. What I like about GG is that it is unabashed in it's offering of hotties having sex, hotties drinking and smoking, hotties trashing and bitching and manipulating, etc etc etc. I have made no secret in my blog entries that I am craving my next junk soap trash weekly fix, a la MELROSE PLACE or DYNASTY. BROTHERS AND SISTERS didnt fit the bill last year, which ultimately bored me with the series. This year, early expectations are on CANE or DIRTY SEXY MONEY to fill the bill, but if those two fail to deliver, I know I have GOSSIP GIRL to rely on (for now). Series could get old, fast. Just look at THE O.C. It was the hottest thing on tv (for two years). Then it sunk fast, and by the end of its fourth year it was gone.
MY PREDICTION: GOSSIP GIRL is challenged by its fickle demo. Its younger target audience is one of the hardest to predict as to what programs will click. My prediction is that GOSSIP GIRL is going to do much better than previous CW shows in this timeslot (VERONICA MARS and ONE TREE HILL). But as far as competition for the other networks? Well, they won't have to be too stressed out by GOSSIP GIRL. Positive word of mouth, though, could change all that. But my prediction is that GG will do good enough ratings to make it to a sophomore year.

FALL TV REVIEW: BACK TO YOU
After watching the pilot to BACK TO YOU, I had to ask myself: "this is new?" I mean, with the combined talent of Kelsey "Frasier" Grammer and Patricia "Everybody Loves Raymond" Heaton, the show already feels and flows like a show in it's second or third season on the air. That's the good news. The bad news is, well, there really isn't any bad news (unless you consider the well-oiled machine just a little too well-oiled and familiar). For me, it's comfort-food comedy, which is all too rare these days, especially for a multi-camera skein. I am definitely on board with this show, and if the rest of the season is consistent as much as the pilot was, I see BACK TO YOU jockeying for major award noms come next Emmy time.
MY PREDICTION: Fox has had a rough go with comedies, with fall television in general, and with the show's lead-out, 'TIL DEATH. I am not a fan of the latter, Brad Garrett comedy, so my ideal hope is that TIL DEATH will bite the dust soon, and THE RETURN OF JEZEBEL JAMES will come along to replace it, thus fortifying a solid block of new comic highs. Competition for BACK TO YOU includes the much-hyped PUSHING DAISIES and the UGH-LY KID NATION. Fox is 100% behind BACK TO YOU, and if ratings aren't hot out of the gate, look for FOX to nurture BACK TO YOU anywhere and everywhere in hopes of finding a place for it to stick. The show already has a 13 episode commitment, and should certainly stick around all season. Hell, if TIL DEATH can get to season 2, I see no reason why the far superior BACK TO YOU wouldnt as well.

FALL TV REVIEW: K-VILLE
This was a tuffie to rate (and to like). I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to enjoy K-VILLE, mainly because I support all and any efforts to get film crews to NOLA to infuse money into the economy there. Unfortunately, the K-VILLE series is too contrived for me. Sure, it's also too glum (but how could it not be?) It's a tricky line to cross: on one you want to show the place as vibrant and alive, but outside of the French Quarter and downtown, things just aren't bright and cheery yet. So - for me, and to other viewers - I am not sure I want to return to the glumness week in and week out. Further, by showing the crime and decay (as realistic as they may be), paints a picture for would-be tourists that maybe New Orleans isnt a safe place to visit (which, if that effect occurs, can only worsen tourism at a time when it is most needed). I fear that the series K-VILLE borders on exploitation, though I give kudos to the show for trying to entertain, nonetheless.
So, taking all the politics out of the equation, I just want to rate the show on how well it entertained me. And, to be honest, it didnt do all that great a job. Most of what I saw in the pilot had been done before on other cop shows - and done better, at that. So when you cut right to the chase, K-VILLE disappointed.
MY PREDICTION: It has a VERY tough time-slot (opposite HEROES, DANCING WITH THE STARS, TWO AND A HALF MEN) to overcome, with a weakened 3rd season of PRISON BREAK as lead-in. I think curiosity will bring some initial traffic to the show, but by November, K-VILLE will be petering out. And once 24 and AMERICAN IDOL return come winter, K-VILLE will probably find itself on network hiatus (if not already cancelled).

FALL TV REVIEWS: THE BIG BANG THEORY
I caught a preview showing of CBS' THE BIG BANG THEORY the other night. I thought it held up well for being the pilot, but I wonder if my interest can be sustained in the week-to-week premise of two geeks trying to impress a beauty across the hall. The show certainly is smartly written, and the leads handled their lines well, but I was less impressed with CHARMED girl Kelly Cuoco. She has the bod, but not the HUBBA HUBBA needed to explain why the two geeks are so ga-ga (or rather why Johnny Galecki's geek is so ga-ga: the taller roomie is more fey gay than anything else).
So overall I can only say the show is average, but if it can start thinking outside the box, it does have potential and promise.
MY PREDICTION: THE BIG BANG will be gone by Christmas. The show airs on Number One CBS, which has THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE, THE CAPTAIN and a couple other comedies on reserve just waiting to take the place of any show not making an immediate dent in the ratings. And based on the pilot of BBT, I don't think it has the goods that audiences are looking for - especially with CHUCK, DANCING WITH THE STARS, ALIENS IN AMERICA and PRISON BREAK as competion. It's lead-in, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, has never been a ratings monster to date, which further hinders THEORY's chances. Plus, nary a single critics list has included BIG BANG in it's MUST SEE PICKS. So look for THE BIG BANG THEORY to play through September and October, but it will get the big ON HIATUS yank by the holidays.

FALL TV REVIEW: CW Now and Online Nation

FALL TV REVIEWS: CW NOW and ONLINE NATION
The titles are pretty self-explanatory: CW NOW is the CW's attempt to show what's hot in movies, television, music, gadgets, fashion, etc. However, the presentation of the material was B-ORING. As for ONLINE NATION, which brings together the funniest viral videos from the internet, it's funny, irrevent, and much more fun to watch than the competition over at ABC: I mean, really, how many more times can we laugh at balls to the crotches, brides passing out at the alter, and snowmobilers running into tree hedges over at AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS? Okay, don't answer that.
CW NOW: D+
ONLINE NATION: B-
MY PREDICTIONS: Unfortunately, these buzz-news shows don't have the buzz themselves, and the weak CW NOW is a poor intro to ONLINE NATION, which will only bring the ratings down for the latter. I foresee extremely low ratings for both, but since they are both cheap to produce - and without much to replace it in the timeslot - I imagine The CW will stick with both shows until they can find something better to replace CW NOW with. But then again, CW NOW's title alone promotes the network. In short, both shows will survive the fall, but all bets are off come January.

FALL TV: THE SIMPSONS review
THE SIMPSONS MOVIE was a surprise summer success, so I guess my expectations were higher that the 19th season premiere of THE SIMPSONS would knock my socks off. Instead, it felt every bit as tired as a 19th season would suggest. Hopefully the show will perk up in the weeks ahead, but I have to say, Comedy Central's SOUTH PARK runs toon circles around SIMPSONS these days.
MY PREDICTION: It's hard to bet against one of the longest running shows on television, so I won't. Look for THE SIMPSONS to continue to bring revenue to the Fox network, but at a price: the all-animation block on this night won't take off until after football season is over.

FALL TV REVIEW: Chuck

FALL TV REVIEW: HEROES
I was part of the 50% of people who felt let-down by last May's HEROES finale. So it's nice to see the show return more restrained. By tackling less characters (many of our favorites won't appear until next week), and by introducing a few new ones, the show is a solid, entertaining hour of drama, comedy and adventure. I especially like the sub-story of Hiro and his time travels. I was less impressed with the death of one of my favorite secondary characters (but the plotline of this murder mystery is a killer). I am also looking forward to the arrival of Miss Veronica Mars. Way to go, HEROES!
A
MY PREDICTION: More solid success for season 2.

FALL TV REVIEW: CHUCK
It's rather hard not to fall in love with the quirky action/comedy/romance hybrid known as CHUCK. It is equal parts ALIAS, HOT FUZZ and MR AND MRS SMITH, and Zachery Levi is the breakout star here. It's also great to see FIREFLY/SERENITY's 'Jane', Adam Baldwin. The tone of this series is light caper that knows how to mix a little humor into the espionage plot points as the title character realizes he has government secrets stored in his brain that were accidentally downloaded there from his college roomie/buddy Bryce. The real test now is to see if the quality of the the first episode can extend beyond the awesome pilot.
A
MY PREDICTION: DANCING WITH THE STARS is going to steamroll through this hour on ABC, which will leave all the other networks scrambling for second place. I am already a lover of CBS' HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, and I am looking forward to CW's ALIENS IN AMERICA. So I am pretty open to any other success here except for PRISON BREAK. It's going to be a fierce battle and there will be casualties. But if the public will give CHUCK a chance they will be rewarded with a great companion to lead into HEROES with. It's good for CHUCK to stay here, and I believe it will succeed (DAMN I HOPE SO!).

FALL TV REVIEWS: MOTHER and MEN
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER kicked off season 3 just how I predicted: with Barney saying 'DARY'. You have to go back to the end of season 2 to understand what that half-word means and signifies. I sorta found the stunt casting of Enrique Iglesias and Mandy Moore to be distracting, but hey, if it corrals more viewers to the show, then 'AWESOME'! Neil Patrick Harris stole the show (no surprise there), but the characters of Ted Moseby and Robin Sparkles (hehe) were off. Still, this show is my favorite comedy on television.
THIRD SEASON PREMIERE EPISODE: B+
OVERALL SERIES: A+
TWO AND A HALF MEN: The highlight of the show is Jake joining Junior High School. Otherwise, the comedy fell flat (especially Charlie Sheen's Meatballs and Celery Stalk rash....ewww). I can't wait for Stalker Rose's return in Episode 100... her comic relief is missed.
FIFTH SEASON PREMIERE EPISODE: C
OVERALL SERIES: B

MY PREDICTIONS: Monday is incredibly competitive (DANCING WITH THE STARS, HEROES, ALIENS IN AMERICA, PRISON BREAK, BACHELOR), so I fear that CBS's once-dominance in the Monday Comedy category will continue to erode this year. Still, TWO MEN was consistenly in the TOP TEN over the summer, so it still has juice. But HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER has a weak pairing with THE BIG BANG THEORY, so I fear that DANCING WITH THE STARS will have a big impact on MOTHER's numbers. MEN is a solid hit and will stay put for the entire season. MOTHER, on the other hand, will find a different timeslot if it doesnt catch on early in the season. Both shows will make it to May 2008.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW - Freaks And Geeks

FREAKS AND GEEKS: Where Are They Now?
One of my favorite shows of ALL TIME is the brilliant but cancelled FREAKS AND GEEKS, which ran on NBC back in 1999. I was like the rest of you back then: I didnt watch it. My excuse was that I was busy working on my 4.00 in Psychology at Eastern Illinois University and getting drunk at Marty's Bar after classes instead of watching television. So what prompted me to buy the ENTIRE 18 episode series on DVD? Easy - James Franco. But after seeing the incredible pilot episode, I was soon enthralled with every episode of the series thereafter. In short, the show follows the geeks and the freaks in a show that takes place during the early 80s. The use of music and nostalgia are infectious, and so is the cast. And what a cast it was!
THE BOYS:

JAMES FRANCO later went on to win accolades in the TV Movie based on James Dean before soaring to a cinematic high in all three Spider-Man movies. He continues to make feature films, such as FLYBOYS and ANNAPOLIS, but has yet to bare his ass (at least I dont think he has).

SETH ROGEN: Who knew that this secondary character from FAG (that's short for Freaks And Geeks, by the way) would be the superstar of the '07 Summer. He was the leading man in KNOCKED UP and the goofy cop in SUPERBAD. Other TV: UNDECLARED. He can next be heard in HORTON HEARS A WHO.

JASON SEGEL: Mr J is now in his third season of my favorite comedy on TV at the moment: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER on CBS. He was also inKNOCKED UP, and will next be seen in the feature film FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL with Miss Mars herself, Kristen Bell. Other TV: UNDECLARED.

JOHN FRANCIS DALEY: played little pip squeek Sam Weir. He is all grown up now, of course. He had a brief flirt with TV fame again in KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL (soon to be on DVD). I am sure he will pop up in a Judd Apatow movie soon (don't they all?)

SAMM LEVINE: Samm was another pip squeek. Guest TV work included my faves VERONICA MARS and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. He also had a funny poolside death scene in the horror comedy CLUB DREAD.

MARTIN STARR: Martin put the EEK in GEEK. Film credits include SUPERBAD, KNOCKED UP. TV Credits include REVELATIONS, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER and the brilliant UNDECLARED.

THE GIRLS:

LINDA CARDINELLI: Linda was the star of Freaks and has since blossomed in TV and movies. She is currently starting her fifth year in the ER. But I kinda liked her best as Velma in the two SCOOBY DOO features. Other films: JIMINY GLICK IN LA LA LAND, BAREBACK MOUNTAIN and GRANDMA'S BOY. Next up: THE HEAVEN PROJECT in 2008.

BUSY PHILLIPS: Busy played the love her/hate her Kim Kelly in FAG. I loved her in the show, and am glad to hear she will be guesting on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER this season. She is also joining her pal Linda as a cast member on ER this season (possibly it's final). She was also a lead in the quickly cancelled LOVE INC two years ago.

SARAH HAGAN: Sarah played the geek to Linda's freak as Millie Kentner. Since FAG, Sarah has guested on UNDECLARED, MEDIUM, CLOSE TO HOME and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Her next assignment: SPRING BREAKDOWN with Amy Poeller, Rachel Dratch and Parker Posey.

THE CREATOR:

JUDD APATOW: Judd is THE IT MAN of film comedy these days, thanks to the HUGE success of TALLADEGA NIGHTS, 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN (with Seth Rogen), KNOCKED UP (with Seth Rogen, Martin Starr, and Jason Segel) and SUPERBAD (with Seth Rogen and Martin Starr). Coming up: FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL (with Jason Segel), DRILLBIT TAYLOR, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS (with Seth Rogen and James Franco) and WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY. But it's his one-two TV combo of FREAKS AND GEEKS and UNDECLARED that will forever cement Judd in my pop culture life.

FALL TV REVIEW: Reaper and PRivate Practice

FALL TV REVIEW: Private Practice
Manipulative. That's the word that came to mind immediately as I closed out the final 10 minutes of this GREYS spin-off. Certainly I didn't buy into a single character on the show...each person's rants and quirks bled together into one to the point where I found it hard to tell anyone apart, be them male, female, black or white. Every interpersonal interaction had undertones of smugness and rudeness. For a calming alternative to hospital medicine, PRIVATE PRACTICE felt about as cold or sterile as anything ER could offer. Just about every plot in the opener had a conflict, two characters not trusting each other or sparring with each other, each character trying to one-up someone else, then conflict/crisis solved, characters smile and apologize over tears and smiles and la la la..all is good in LA again (until next week, that is.) Sorry, good production values and an eye-candy cast can't save this mess. Oh, and I dont watch GREYS ANATOMY, so I have nothing to compare it to. All I know is that I am out of PRACTICE already.
C-
MY PREDICTION: GREYS is HUGE! And fans will follow PRACTICE (at least in it's infancy). But it will take some more tweaking of the show (not to mention having this group of characters actually get along) to save it. I have a feeling that PRACTICE will have outstayed it's welcome by the end of the spring season.

FALL TV REVIEW: REAPER
I'm in love! With both the series REAPER and with its lead actor, Bret Harrison. Bret plays the character of Sam, who was sold to the devil back when Sam's daddy was dying of cancer. Now Sam's job is to gather up the escaped bad-ass souls from Hell who have decided to wreak havoc above ground. The film is well-crafted, funny, scary and goo-gooey with a possible love interest for Sam in the form of former HEROES people-shifter Missy Peregym. I'm quite confident that positive word of mouth will spread and keep this show alive. The pilot was directed by CLERKS-maestro Kevin Smith. It will be interesting to see if the quality for future episodes can match the opener without Kevin's direction. Still, The CW hit gold with this buzz show, so if you havent seen REAPER yet, please do so. So far, it's my favorite new show of the year (with DIRTY SEXY MONEY, CAVEMEN, PUSHING DAISIES, VIVA LAUGHLIN, BIONIC WOMAN and ALIENS IN AMERICA still on tap to try and razzle-dazzle me).
A+
MY PREDICTION: Well, one strike against REAPER is that it's on the little-watched CW. Strike two is that it is up against HOUSE, strike three is that its up against THE UNIT and strike fo-oops, by now it should be out. Hmmm..well, like I said: watch the show, spread the word and keep REAPER around all year. The show has quality and buzz, and for the very strike against REAPER for being on THE CW, that fact also keeps the show alive because THE CW hardly has anything better to replace it with (unless those PUSSYCAT DOLLS come knocking again). I see REAPER picking up fans throughout the season and coming back for season 2.

RANT AND RAVE: Britney Spears Y'all!

It takes A LOT for a mother to lose custody of her children, but somehow Britney Spears managed just that. Actually, any look at the celebrity's antics over the last 2 years shows how unfit and unstable she was on the outside. And I say 'on the outside' because that's all the public can truly base anything on. None of us actually saw how Britney interacted with her children away from the spotlight and inside her home. But now that family, friends and bodyguards, maids and nannies have all come forward, the picture painted of Britney is definitely not a Monet.
Britney had (and has) a lot of fans who wanted to see her 'comeback' from all of this. But her attitude, evidenced at this year's Video Music Awards, was a disaster, and a HUGE part of that all lied within Britney herself. It's been noted over and over again how Britney didnt want any help, no one could tell her what to do, she was out of control, she didnt treat people with any respect. In short, Britney brought all of this on herself. I haven't walked in her shoes, so it's not my place to damn her. But it seems like she is battling a shitload of demons. It's pretty apparent the girl can't cope with reality. Maybe now is the wake up call and she will get help. And people on her side should no longer make excuses for her. SHE NEEDS HELP now more than ever. Too many times in the past people were afraid to say no to her ...in the end all she had were enablers in her life. All the good, strong, integrity-minded people were already kicked out of her life by Britney herself, or they walked out of her life because of her tiresome tirades and spotty attitude.
Britney, should she get help and crawl out of this rock bottom she is in, deserves her kids. Her kids DESERVE a loving, caring mother who has their best interests in mind. But until BRITNEY becomes THAT PERSON, then ABSOLUTELY, and POSITIVELY, those kids should NOT be left in her care.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE is the best movie musical I have seen since CHICAGO. Of course, HAIRSPRAY, RENT, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and DREAMGIRLS are still awesome movies, none of them moved me quite the way UNIVERSE did. In terms of powerful messages, RENT (with it's starving artists and AIDS backdrop) comes closest, but that movie was inconsistent overall. UNIVERSE, which uses only Beatles songs (33 in all, and all sung by the performers), is strong on visual and style. The drawback is that the plot itself has been played out many times before (even drawing comparisons in plot to the musical HAIR), but what's unique with UNIVERSE is that it's both giddy and gripping, all told with visual and creative flair by the helmer, Julie Taymoor. Evan Rachel Wood explodes onto the screen in the role of Lucy, and the two male leads of Jim Sturgess (Jude) and Joe Anderson (Max) are brilliant as well. Anderson sorta stole the movie for me...he is both sexy and approachable..and has an awesome underwater nude scene showing off his ASSet quite nicely (yup, I have a man-crush on Joe Anderson).
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE opened in only 23 theaters a few weeks ago. I saw it yesterday (as it widened to 277 joints). I really hope this movie goes seriously wide so that everyone can have a chance to see yet another great musical. Let's hope SWEENEY TODD keeps the momentum going Christmas Day.

FALL TV REVIEW: Dirty Sexy Money

FALL TV REVIEW: Dirty Sexy Money
If you are in the mood to see one of the richest families on the planet have multiple meltdowns in a succession of over-the-top scenarios, DIRTY SEXY MONEY might be up your alley. It's the anti-BROTHERS AND SISTERS in that pretty much everyone in the Darling family is fucked up, which makes great trash television. One of the highlights was the Baldwin brother who can't let go of his tranny mistress (who is a REAL tranny this time - instead of the girl playing a tranny off UGLY BETTY). At the grounded core is Peter Krause's character, who -over the course of his employment for the Darlings - may find his life just as fucked up as well (especially once he finds out who possibly murdered his father). The show doesn't venture to be realistic, so as a nighttime sudser DIRTY delivers.
A
MY PREDICTION: It isnt very compatible with PRIVATE PRACTICE as a lead-in. If PP can master some boffo ratings, DSM will stick around. But, if as I suspect, audiences will be bored by PP, then getting them to stick around for DSM will be more a challenge. I think DSM will survive the season, but may find a time-slot change in the next couple months.

FALL TV REVIEW: Journeyman, Moonlight, etc

FALL TV REVIEW: Aliens In America
ALIENS IN AMERICA is the latest single-camera comedy that is smartly written, well-acted, and fully entertaining (think along the lines of classics like ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT). The only difference? It's on The CW (ouch). This fish out of water story of an American nerd and a Pakistani nerd opened with laughs and (near) tears. I think it's a keeper, totally.
A-
MY PREDICTION: Would have played better on a different network. It doesnt fit in with the GAME and GIRLFRIENDS comedies that follow it. Needs transplanted to a different night, especially in the wake of competition from DANCING WITH THE STARS, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, PRISON BREAK and CHUCK. Oddly, even though i love the show, i dont think it will survive the season.

FALL TV REVIEW: Journeyman
Kevin McKidd, late of HBO's ROME, has star-presence in this well-produced, intriguing, often confusing tale of one man's multiple experiences of suddenly traveling to various past moments of his life. Unlike NBCs QUANTUM LEAP, which explained itself in episode 1, JOURNEYMAN is one of those serialized shows that has a greater mythology at its roots. I believe each episode will revolve around Kevin's character using his time travel to help guest stars in crisis, while over the course of the season figuring out just what this time tripping is all about. The show certainly has its flaws, but it's gorgeous in high def, and San Francisco has never looked this beautiful on a tv show in a LONG TIME, if ever. Next week's episode travels back to the San Francisco earthquake...that should be fun. But even better will be when the lead does some trippin and investigatin in the Castro area. JOURNEYMAN is an intelligently written series aimed more toward adults (unlike the more kiddie time taveling show QUANTUM LEAP).
B
MY PREDICTION: Paired with HEROES, the time travel element bodes well when seen next to a Hiro-heavy episode. HEROES brings in huge numbers for NBC, and so far nothing else has played well in JOURNEYMAN's time slot (g'by STUDIO 60 and THE BLACK DONNELLY'S). It's going to have show some strong numbers to stick, and if people don't jump aboard early, they may never (given the show's hard to understand nature if someone should miss an episode). I have a feeling JOURNEYMAN won't give NBC the ratings they want and it will get relocated to another night, with BIONIC WOMAN eventually taking this time slot for some test runs at some point. By the end of this tv season, NBC will have either found a different show that has succeeded here, or they will be looking for a replacement for next year. Either way, I don't think JOURNEYMAN will be in this time slot come 2008-2009.

FALL TV REVIEW: MOONLIGHT
Slow. Predictable. Bad Acting. Bad Writing. Other than a hottie as the lead, there really isn't anything positive I can say about MOONLIGHT other than the lead actor likes O-positive blood? A contrived back story is lackluster, as is this show. And even though I never got to see the pilot of BABYLON FIELDS (a genre show about zombies among the living that was passed over by CBS last spring), it's a head-scratcher as to why CBS went with this vampire mess to be paired up with the other spooky-themed GHOST WHISPERER on Friday nights. Needless to say, I won't be back for , um, seconds.
D-
MY PREDICTION: In a perfect world, MOONLIGHT would have never aired. But there isn't much in the way of competition on Friday nights, and the chicks might stick around for the romance factor, but people are smarter than to give this show much traction beyond 13 episodes.

FALL TV REVIEW: The Bionic Woman
Nothing against Michelle Ryan, but she is no Lindsay Wagner. Even though BW has been updated for the new milineum, I still think the original was better (cheese and all). For all it's new sleek badness, BIONIC WOMAN took itself way too seriously in the opener, and if that's going to be the tone for the rest of the series, I don't think I will be sticking around for too long. Television these days, in terms of quality, far exceeds the era known as Jiggle TV back in the 70s when the original BW aired. However, sometimes a guy just wants silly entertainment (think CHARLIE'S ANGELS, THE LOVE BOAT, THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, MISFITS OF SCIENCE, - okay, maybe not that last one). In a current era chock-ful of heavy procedurals (CSI, LAW AND ORDER, COLD CASE, WITHOUT A TRACE, that SHARK show, and CRIMINAL MINDS), it's a welcome to see genre fare like CHUCK, REAPER and PUSHING DAISIES to come along and infuse some humor into the mix. BIONIC WOMAN, however, is a bit too dramatic (for now). Now that the basic premise has been established I will be curious to find out just what the show is really going to try to pull off for 22 weeks. I remain optimistic, but for now, I'm on the bubble.
B-
MY PREDICTION: NBC needs hits, and they need BIONIC WOMAN. It's too hyped to just toss away. Initial ratings will be high, but it will take good storytelling to bring audiences back for extra doses of Jamie Somers. I think the show will have a so-so season overall, which, for NBC, is as good as gold.

FALL TV REVIEW: Ugly Betty
One of my favorite new shows last year was the utterly awesome UGLY BETTY. And even though it lost the Best Comedy Emmy this year, I am glad America still won Best Actress. ABC is very good at hour-long comedy/dramas (DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and DIRTY SEXY MONEY also come to mind), and BETTY is back (better, brighter and betty-ier than ever before). The second season premiere episode alone had a number of nifty plot twists (including a doozie of a Santos shocker). I heart UGLY BETTY!!!!

A+

MY PREDICTION: A strong season premiere bodes well for another stellar year at MODE. This show is an ABC hit, and one that will be around for at least 4 years.

FALL TV Reviews: Cavemen, Life

FALL TV: Save These Shows!
The new fall tv shows now airing need help. CHUCK, REAPER, ALIENS IN AMERICA, BACK TO YOU, GOSSIP GIRL, DIRTY SEXY MONEY, JOURNEYMAN and ONLINE NATION have all gotten off to a bumpy start (only BIONIC WOMAN looks to be an early hit). But it isn't just the new shows that need help. The following lower-rated shows have all been given another chance to catch on, so please take a moment to watch:
*HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (Mondays, 8 PM, CBS) A+
*30 ROCK (Thursdays, 8:30 PM, NBC) A+ and the current Best Comedy Emmy Winner. It barely survived to see another season.
*FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (Fridays, 9:00 PM, NBC). I havent seen it yet either, but it's supposed to be awesome, so I am going to watch it this week based on that fact alone (after all, I would be a hypocrite on here if I didn't give it at least a try)
*JERICHO (CBS: Midseason) This show was cancelled, then after a successful nut-job from the fans CBS renewed it for 7 more episodes. Watch it now or forever miss out on this innovative series. B+

FALL TV REVIEW: BIG SHOTS
Instead of titling it BIG SHOTS, it should have been called BIG GROANS. This is a terrible show about four macho guys delivering unbelievable dialogue. What's worse, I can only one of the four (Michael Vartan's character) - the other three annoyed the hell out of me (in fact, Christopher Titus' character was so annoying that it made the entire series unwatchable). This show is pure fantasy-fluff for females... with all of the plots contrived (i mean, John Getz's death by golf cart was entirely predictable - and just not that funny). YECH!
D-
MY PREDICTION: With so many tonally similar shows on the network, I can't see ABC keeping this one around for very long (unless audiences are idiot enough to watch it). I sure hope this one bites the dust soon (isnt OCTOBER ROAD waiting in the wings, anyway?)

FALL TV REVIEW: LIFE
This is one of those quirky character studies of a often-quirky man who plays by his own rules. The pilot was side-lined with those LAW & ORDER and CSI-like crime scene scenarios that I loathe. So I am really the worst judge of this kind of show because I HATE them all, even ones that are well-made and produced, such is LIFE. If this is your cup of tea, great. But it's not mine - and I think LIFE represents a step backward instead of forward. Been there, done that kind of show.
D+
MY PREDICTION: Terrible title, but it doesnt have much competition on Tuesday nights, so I imagine that if audiences click with it, they will make LIFE a so-so hit, and for NBC (again), that's as good as gold.

FALL TV REVIEW: CAVEMEN
Uh......yeah, ...right. Well, the last time I checked what defines a 'comedy' I came up with the answer of 'a program that is funny'. But when I watched ABC's "comedy" CAVEMEN I did NOT laugh once (not a single time). I really wanted to like CAVEMEN. I kinda enjoyed the GEICO ads the show is based on, and I thought the series could have that cult-like ALF or DINOSAURS vibe going on with it. But nope, CAVEMEN is dead on arrival. I won't be back to see the next episode, or any thereafter.
D
MY PREDICTION: It's hard to think that CAVEMEN will make it past 3 episodes. Yes, CAVEMEN is THAT BAD.

FALL TV REVIEWS: Cane, Pushing Daisies,, Carpoolers

FALL TV REVIEW: CANE
Hottest. Cast. On. Television.
Now I just wish the show itself would get a little more exciting. It plays like an updated DALLAS (which also had a slow start and didnt become a runaway hit until someone up and shot JR; and DYNASTY didnt take off until Alexis made her first courtroom appearance in season 2). So I am optimistic that CANE will eventually get just as soaped up as it's earlier influences. CANE is certainly refreshing in it's portrayal of a successful Cuban family and their exploits in the sugar/rum business in South Florida. Just about any male lead in the cast is do-able. HELL, that goes for the females, too. YUMMY!
B-
MY PREDICTION: Again, the show starts slow, which may hurt repeat business for Episode 2. I am not sure Number 1 CBS will show much patience for any new show that doesnt hit ratings gold, especially with most of their crime procedurals delivering lower ratings that normal this season. CANE will need to show some stability in the weeks to come. If it continues to lose audiences each week, it will be gone by 2008.
NEW FALL SHOWS REMAINING FOR ME TO REVIEW: LIFE IS WILD (The CW), SAMANTHA WHO? (ABC), WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB (ABC) and VIVA LAUGHLIN (CBS).

FALL TV REVIEW: PUSHING DAISIES
Ahhh..BLISS! PUSHING DAISIES was the show I was most looking forward to seeing all summer long. And after seeing the pilot, it is my favorite new show of the fall. In fact, PUSHING DAISIES might just possibly be my favorite show on network television (including all the returning shows, too). The series is blissfully romantic, funny, charming...a fairy tale of a show. Nothing quite like it has ever aired, and I hope DAISIES is the future - bold and daring, yet enjoyable and highly entertaining. I am sure you have all heard the premise by now, so I won't bore you. Instead, I just urge you to watch PUSHING DAISIES and breathe in the freshest new show on TV.
A+++
MY PREDICTION: Considering creator Bryan Fuller's last quirky TV Masterpieces (DEAD LIKE ME and WONDERFALLS: two of my all-time favorite shows) barely found an audience until after cancellation (whereupon they are both cult faves), PUSHING DAISIES has the chance to become one of those 'Brilliant But Cancelled' sad-stories. But I imagine that if people tune into this Big-Buzzed Show, they will come back for seconds (and thirds, and fourths..and hopefully, eventually, at least four years of syndicated-bound treasures).

FALL TV REVIEW: Carpoolers
Compared to CAVEMEN, CARPOOLERS is hilarious. But then again, I didnt laugh once during CAVEMEN. And on it's own, CARPOOLERS is just barely interesting. What killed the show for me was the looped footage of the car in the carpooler lane - i counted during one scene and the same yellow-front semi appeared SIX times. Ugh.
C-
MY PREDICTION: CARPOOLERS is weak on its own, but made even weaker by CAVEMEN. ABC has a number of great mid-season shows on tap, and I predict SAMANTHA WHO? and MISS/GUIDED will eventually occupy this time slot (bye bye CAVEMEN and CARPOOLERS) once DANCING WITH THE STARS winds down.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW - VERONICA MARS

Few non-sci/fi shows reach cult status the way dearly-departed VERONICA MARS did during it's 3 year run on UPN/THE CW from 2004-2007. Maybe that explains why two of the show's principle players ARE in sci-fi/fantasy shows today.
*KRISTEN BELL: Much of VM's success laid in the charms of lead Bell, and this season TVland saw KB in no less than 2 shows, albeit one as a voice-over (GOSSIP GIRLS). Genre fans will be jumping for joy when Miss Bell joins HEROES in November and hits the big screen in the movie FANBOYS. She also has FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL coming out in 2008 from FREAKS AND GEEKS/KNOCKED UP maestro Judd Apatow.
*JASON DOHRING: JD played Logan Echolls on VM from Day One. I was part of the split who did NOT want Ronnie and Logan together. I just never liked Jason as an actor, and that became even more conclusive when I saw his lackluster performance in the new vampire tale MOONLIGHT (CBS Fridays).
*PERCY DAGGS: PD played BFF Wallace on VM. He hasnt done much since the show ended, but he can be seen in AMERICAN SON, which is now in post-production. Ironically, Percy played MATHLETE 2 in an episode of the previously mentioned Judd Apatow show FREAKS AND GEEKS.
*ENRICO COLANTONI: Enrico was probably the best known of the VM ensemble when the show first preemed in 2004 for his role in the NBC 90s hit-com JUST SHOOT ME. I liked him best, however, from his appearance in the hi-LAR-ious GALAXY QUEST. Enrico can next be seen as Speedo Boy in the TV mini-series ZOS: Zone Of Separation in 2008.
*CHRIS LOWELL: Chris joined the show in its final year and shared a heart-pumping kiss with Veronica Mars near the series' end. Chris signed onto ABC's PRIVATE PRACTICE even before VM was officially announced as dead and can be seen as sweet eye-candy on that ill-making GREY'S ANATOMY Wednesday night spin-off.
*TINA MAJORINO: Tina has been a veteran of movies for years (ANDRE, WATERWORLD, and the cult NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE). After hanging it up as Mac on VERONICA MARS, Tina performed in 11 episodes of the critically-acclaimed HBO drama BIG LOVE.
*FRANCIS CAPRA: FC had a bit of a following as Eli on VM, but has since only guest-starred on two TV shows since: CRIMINAL MINDS and THE CLOSER.
*THE CASSABLANCA'S: RYAN HANSEN ("Dick Cassablanca") will next be seen in SHERMAN'S WAY, PARTY DOWN and SUPERHERO!...KYLE GALLNER (The murderous "Beaver Cassablancas") scored airtime on The CW hit SMALLVILLE and did 6 episodes of BIG LOVE (the same show Miss Majorino did)...CHARISMA CARPENTER("Kendall Cassablancas") was best known pre-VM as Cordelia Chase for 90 episodes of the cult ANGEL series, and for 57 episodes of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER prior to that. Post-VM was a guest shot on GREEK, and its just a matter of time before the charismatic Charisma strikes again
*TEDDY GUNN: As Duncan Kane, I was totally rooting for him and Veronica to be together. But mid-way through season 2 Duncan's storyline came to an end. Since VM, Teddy has done LAST RESORT and JUMPER. In other words, NOT NEARLY ENOUGH!
*MICHAEL MUHNY: Michael was the 'love to hate him' Sheriff Lamb on VM, and he died off a couple episodes before the series died. He is currently filming FAMILY PRACTICE for TV, and pre-VM was a cast member of the TV shows TURKS and THE HUNTRESS.
*MAX GREENFIELD: Next to Duncan, I liked Veronica with Deputy Leo D'Amato. Ronnie broke his heart in the second season, thus ending Max's stay on the show. But TODAY, Max is jerking it up as slimey receptionist Nick Pepper on ABC's UGLY BETTY (you know, the guy with the headset who is always bickering with Amanda).
*AMANDA SEYFRIED: She may have only been on VERONICA MARS for one year, but as first-year character LILY KANE she WAS the show. That season's year-long mystery all revolved around Who Killed Lily Kane? Prior to VM, Amanda was best known as one of the MEAN GIRLS. Since VM, she has filmed 14 episodes of BIG LOVE as Sarah Henrickson and is also shooting the musical MAMMA MIA!
*HARRY HAMLIN: As Aaron Echolls, Harry did two years on VM after striking big in the 80s on LA LAW and CLASH OF THE TITANS and gay-drama flick MAKING LOVE. This decade he hoofed it up on DANCING WITH THE STARS.
*LISA RINNA: Lisa did 3 episodes as Aaron Echoll's wife Lynn. In real life she IS Harry Hamlin's wife. And, like Harry, Lisa hoofed it up on DANCING WITH THE STARS. Lisa first gained fame as Billie Reed on DAYS OF OUR LIVES. Recently she guest starred on a memorable ENTOURAGE episode.
*ALYSON HANNIGAN: Rounding out the Echolls brood was 3-time guest star Hannigan as Trina Echolls. Alyson is currently in her third year on the CBS comedy HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, and was well-known as Willow on 144 episodes of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. ALYSON has also done some widely seen features: all of the AMERICAN PIE movies and the lead in DATE MOVIE (just about the only good thing IN that movie).
*ALONA TAL: She played memorable School Bus Crash survivor Meg in the second season of VM. More recently I just saw Alona last night in the pilot episode of CBS's CANE as Rebecca King. She also stayed in The CW family by doing 4 episodes of SUPERNATURAL.
*ERICA GIMPEL: She played Wallace's mom and Keith Mars first and second season main squeeze Alicia Fennel. I most remember her as Coco from the early 80s tv music drama FAME. Since VM Erica has logged in 4 episodes of BOSTON LEGAL.

HEY Y'ALL!!!!

I know it may LOOK like I have slacked off for the better part of the year. Fact is, I have been blogging all along (it's just that I have been doing it all on my MySpace). Unfortunately, traffic to MySpace sorta sucked, so I missed you all here. So I am going to blog both places (same blog info, so no need to hook over to MySpace if you don't want to). To catch you up, here are a few of the more recent MySpace blog postings:
